Endoscopy

Endoscopy Endoscopy (from Greek “endon” – “inside” and “scopeo” – “watch”) is a visual method of instrumental diagnostics which allows to see into a cored organ without using scalpel. The main instrument of an endoscopist is, actually, an endoscope which is a long flexible hose with an object-glass on its end. With the help of lighting and optic systems it is possible to transact the image from the object-glass to a researcher’s eye, and to display it on the screen of the monitor. With the help of an endoscope it’s also possible to make esofagogastroduodenoscopy (EGDS) – stomach-gullet-duodenum examination, colonoscopy – large intestine examination, and bronchoscopy – trachea and bronchus examination.

With the help of endoscopy it’s possible to make visual evaluation of an organ’s state: presence of strictures or inflammatory erosion, bleeding, neoplasm, etc.; it’s also possible to make some treatment procedures – extraction of small foreign bodies, woolen lumps, excision of polyps, making biopsy. It is possible with the help of special manipulators that replenish endoscopes.

Endoscopy is an indispensable method at differential diagnostics of gastrointestinal tract neoplasm, intestines intussusception and at exposure of foreign bodies in gullet, stomach or duodenum, because such diagnosis is very hard to prove by general diagnostic ways – radiography and US scanning of abdominal cavity. Very often the only approach to this kind of pathology is just diagnostic laparotomy. Thus, we reduce the necessity of groundless surgical operation at differential diagnostics of such pathologies.

A patient’s preparation for diagnostics consists in depriving of food for at least 12 hours, if we’re speaking about EGDS or bronchoscopy, and deep cleansing clyster in case of colonoscopy. It’s necessary for pieces of food or fecal not to disturb visualization of smallest details on the examined organ’s mucous tunic. Besides, animals endoscopy is made under general anaesthetic not to expose a patient to stress from unpleasant feelings and fixation, and to stifle vomiting reflex in case of EGDS and bronchoscopy.

That’s why the decision of necessity and advisability of endoscopic examination for each patient is made together by an attending medical doctor, an endoscopist and an anaesthitist.

Among the equipment of Veterinary Centre ZOOVET there’s an endoscope “Olympus”.

Endoscopy is made by veterinary doctor Maksim Alexandrovich Gounin.
